Sometimes the best way to deal with tragedy is to laugh it off.

Perhaps the strategy for Iowa’s Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which yesterday posted three new videos poking fun at the federal government’s website that, when functioning properly, allows Americans to purchase health insurance.

“Things don’t always work out the way they are supposed to,” one ad says.

That might be the understatement of the year for the Obama administration, which has suffered blow after blow due to the website’s failure. Testimony on Capitol Hill this week revealed that much of the insurance portal needs to be built, and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius must have been a little red-faced Tuesday when the website crashed — during a media event she was holding to demonstrate the page’s features.

Wellmark, which is running the ads in Iowa and South Dakota, uses the spots to encourage people to sign up through the company’s own website.
