LINCOLN — With her husband scheduled to speak in Nebraska on Monday, U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, announced today that she is resigning this week and will not run for re-election.
Giffords, who is a Democrat, was shot in the head a year ago during a shooting rampage in a Tuscon strip mall. She says her decision allows her to concentrate on her recovery.
Her husband, astronaut and U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Kelly, will be at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on Monday night.
According to the University, Kelly will discuss his wife’s service in Congress and the couple’s struggles in the aftermath of the shooting.
Kelly’s appearance is part of a public service lecture series dedicated to the memory of former Nebraska Congressman Peter Hoagland.
