White House Counsel Resigns as Terror Suspects Moved to U.S.

White House Counsel Greg Craig, the man tasked with closing the military’s Guantanamo Bay prison, has stepped down just as 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and several other prisoners are scheduled to be moved to the U.S. for trial.

Craig fell into disfavor with other top officials over his handling of Obama’s plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison…Craig’s exit was announced on the same day that Attorney General Eric Holder will announce the U.S. is bringing five detainees from Guantanamo Bay – including 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed – to New York City to stand trial…Supporters of the administration’s efforts to close Guantanamo said they were concerned that the timing of Craig’s departure could be interpreted as a signal that Obama is wavering in his commitment to closing the prison, which currently houses about 200 terror suspects. In recent weeks, officials have acknowledged that the administration is unlikely to meet Obama’s self-imposed deadline to shutter the facility by Jan. 22.

He will be replaced by Democratic National Committee counsel Robert Bauer. Mr. Bauer also served as President Obama‘s personal lawyer.
