AUSTIN — Texas state employees who have a spouse and children receiving medical coverage from the state will pay more for their health insurance beginning Sept. 1.

Trustees of the Employees Retirement System unanimously approved a rate increase of 7.36 percent Tuesday for ERS’ UnitedHealthcare HealthSelect plan.

However, ERS will mitigate part of the increase, which could have been as high as 11 percent, by pouring $80 million from contingency funds toward the HealthSelect plan, said Rob Kukla, ERS director of plan benefits.
