U.S. Rep Frank Wolf released a letter Wednesday reiterating his support for the $6 billion project to bring commuter rail to Washington Dulles International Airport.
“It is perhaps the most significant transportation project in the region since the construction of the initial Metrorail system,” the letter said. “The benefits of extending the system to Dulles Airport and Loudoun County are too numerous to list. Can anyone imagine what the Metropolitan Washington region would look like without Metro?”
Wolf has been a frequent critic of MWAA policy, requesting last month a U.S. Department of Transportation audit critical of the authority. His move to provide conciliatory support of for the project is part of a new détente between MWAA and its political adversaries, which include Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.
Phase 2 of the project is supposed to start next year, but awaits Loudoun County’s decision on its participation in the Silver Line. Loudoun will have to decide whether it will help fund two stations for the line by July 4.
