Nebraska Watchdog has learned that if you live in Nebraska zips codes 68129, 69631, 69660, and 32202 you’ve seen over $2.2 million dollars in stimulus funds poured into your backyard.

Unfortunately Nebraska Watchdog has also learned that three of those zips codes don’t exist and the fourth, 32202, is several states away.

In November Nebraska Watchdog told you the federal government’s Recovery.gov Web site incorrectly reported that Nebraska had 48 Congressional Districts (instead of three) receiving stimulus funds. Our report was part of an extensive state-by-state report released by Nebraska Watchdog’s parent company, the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity.

Now along with phantom congressional districts there are phanton zip codes. And Nebraska is not alone. BothNew Mexico Watchdog and West Virginia Watchdog are also reporting nonexistent zip codes in their states.

Nebraska Watchdog has managed to connect the dots and locate where the $2.2 million targeted for Nebraska has apparently wound up.

Zip Code 68129 is actually 69129 in Chappell, Nebraska where the government sent $174,000 to the Creek Valley School District.

Zip Code 69631 is actually 69361 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska where Cirrus House, a home for the mentally ill, received $341,000 in stimulus funds.

Zip Code 69660 is actually 68660 in St. Edward, Nebraska where $24,000 was awarded to the Housing Authorities of St. Edward for heating and air conditioning work at one of its properties.

Zip Code 32202 is actually in Jacksonville, Florida. It appears $1,672,072 went to a subcontractor in Jacksonville for work done on the Roman L. Hruska Federal Courthouse in Omaha.

According to the government’s records none of these projects created a single job.
