NM: University spends stimulus funds on volcano research

SANTA FE — Federal stimulus funds helped pay for British, New Zealand and Italian citizens to study Antarctica’s most active volcano.

The National Science Foundation awarded the $499,991 grant to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in 2009 for four expeditions to Mount Erebus.

But the grant only created and saved more than five part-time jobs at the institute in Socorro.
