East St. Louis school board saved from expulsion, at least temporarily.

SPRINGFIELD — A judge in St. Clair County Circuit Court has prevented the Illinois State Board of Education from temporarily kicking out an East St. Louis school district board of education.

St. Clair County Associate Judge Stephen Rice ruled Monday that the move was unconstitutional, because the board had not been given due process, according to the Belleville News Democrat.

The state Education Board voted in June to remove the board after years of poor academic performance in East St. Louis School District 189 and alleged nepotism. It was the first time such action was taken in the state.

Matt Vanover, spokesman for the Illinois State Board of Education, said the board doesn’t comment on pending litigation.

The order is in effect until another hearing is held in the Circuit Court. As of Tuesday, another hearing had not been scheduled.
