SANTA FE — Cliff Pirtle defeated Chad Hamill in the razor-close state Republican Senate primary in southeastern New Mexico, if state officials confirm the results of a three-county recount.

Capitol Report New Mexico learned about Hamill’s loss Thursday, after Pirtle picked up an additional vote from the recount.

Secretary of State Dianna Duran and the State Canvassing Board are expected to certify the results of the recounts from Otero, Chaves and Eddy counties Monday.

Pirtle’s challenger in the general election will be Senate pro tem Tim Jennings, D-Roswell, who has held this seat for 33 years and has not had a Republican challenger since 2000.
