SANTA FE — Clemente Sanchez won the state Senate Democratic primary by nine votes after a recount runoff against his niece and primary challenger, Maxine Velasquez.
“It’s a big sense of relief,” Sanchez told Capitol Report New Mexico.
The New Mexico primary in Senate District 30 was a crazy, back and forth affair. The two competitors saw their leads increase and diminish by less than 10 votes as provisional ballots were counted and a recount was required.
Sanchez will face Republican Vickie Perea in the November election.
