LENEXA — About 300 heard a 35-minute speech from Rick Santorum on Wednesday in a printing business in advance of the Kansas Republican caucuses on Saturday.

Rick Santorum addressed an audience of about 300 in Lenexa on Wednesday

Another 100 were in line outside as the fire marshal restricted the number allowed to attend.

Santorum told the audience “We’re in it to win here in Kansas.”  …

“We had a good night last night, but so did Gov. Romney,” said Santorum. ” That’s why we have to start anew here.  We have to do well here in Kansas.  We have to win here in Kansas.” …

“This is an authoritarian government, not a government that respects free people.  This is a government that says, ‘we know best, and you will like it’.”  ….

“This is an election about fundamental freedoms.  This is an election about what kind of country that  we’re going to pass on to our children and grandchildren.”

“The conservative heartland – we’ve been doing pretty well.  You know, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa.  We’re surrounding you.  Just make sure you keep that center of the country bright red, strong conservative right here in Kansas.”

At the conclusion of the event Santorum said he was happy to take pictures with members of the audience but “the only requirement is you have to post them on your Facebook page.”

Ron Paul announced plans to attend events in Wichita, Lawrence and Overland Park on Friday and Saturday.  Paul plans to visit several of the caucus locations in Johnson County in person.  Kansas Watchdog will report from some of those Paul events.

An email from KS GOP executive director Clay Barker prior to the Santorium event announced Newt Gingrich had cancelled plans to visit Kansas:  “Newt Gingrich has cancelled all events in Kansas.  He may have surrogates attend some events.  No reason given.”

There have been press reports of Mitt Romney visiting Kansas but Kansas Watchdog cannot confirm this and is not aware of any specifics at this time.
