More weirdness in the Secretary of State’s office

Mary Herrera news conference 8/26/10

We’ve mentioned in earlier posts (such as this one and this one) about the ummm, curious, things going on at the Secretary of State’s office.

There have been accusations of computers linked to porn sites, plus a rash of firings and dismissals and charges of over-politicization of the office (in New Mexico? No!).

Now Steve Terrell of the Santa Fe New Mexican has come across an e-mail from Secretary of State Mary Herrera accusing a former employee of not doing what she wanted him to do — namely, use his contacts in the Republican party in the runup to Herrera’s re-election campaign as a Democrat.

Here’s part of an e-mail from Herrera to James Flores:

“I asked you a long time ago to get involved in the R party, you didn’t and now they are looking for someone to run against me.”

Herrera does not deny writing the e-mail. Terrell writes:

Herrera said Wednesday that she’d only suggested to Flores he become active in the GOP so that Republicans would feel that her office was open to both parties. She said that Flores is one of four Republicans she hired.

As I said, weird. Aside from Herrera telling an employee to work on personally enchancing her professional status, what may be the most surprising is that said boss would put her request in an e-mail.

Here’s the entire article.

    Dear Mary,

Your going out just like the rest of them. You need to join Diane Denish on a farwell tour to Antartica. Just think you can play with the polar bears and sent e-mails to Manny Aragon whose got a nice room with a padded cell at NM Department of Corrections. I think you and Diane need to invite Warden Joe Williams on your little picnic. While your on your picnic ask Good Ole Boy, Joe Williams why 2 weeks ago he had his daughter picked up by ” will not mention his name ” Initials AR, isn’t your daughter on State Probation for drinking???????

and your daughter was not booked into jail but quietly released to AR at Probation Parole. You people all need lengthy vacations and I hope they cut you all loose very soon.

It’s getting increasingly difficult to keep up with, much less understand, what’s going on in the Secretary of State’s office since it seems like every day there’s some new revelation – the latest being the story of Mary Herrera’s no bid contracts and hiring practices (http://www.kob.com/article/stories/S1781823.shtml?cat=500).
