HELENA — Montana’s U.S. Senate race is getting personal.
Last week, Tester released a television commercial condemning Rehberg for voting against breast cancer screening funds. The spot features Lisa Jones, a breast cancer survivor, emotionally telling her story and pontificating on what might have happened had Rehberg been in the U.S. Senate.
“But if he got his way, I don’t want to think about what I would have missed,” Jones says.
Of course, there’s more to the story.
The vote against breast cancer funding was actually a move by the Republican Congress to defund Planned Parenthood, an abortion provider that also delivers certain preventative health services, including some cancer screenings.
Rehberg’s mom, Pat Rehberg, accused the Tester campaign of making the disease too political.
“When Jon Tester says Denny Rehberg doesn’t care about cancer victims, he’s playing politics with a deadly disease,” Pat Rehberg says in the ad. “For 30 years Denny has helped me battle cancer — from breast cancer now to thyroid cancer — he’s been with me because Denny has a good heart and understands what it does to everyone it touches. I know, because Denny’s my son.”
There is no word on how much the Rehberg camp spent on the ad.
