(WASHINGTON, DC) President Barack Obama’s push for $50 million in federal money to prop up ailing state and local budgets could mean that New Hampshire receives the $48 million it’s counting on to help balance the state budget.
Over the weekend, President Obama sent a letter to Congress asking for quick approval of the federal assistance to state and local governments in order to avoid “massive layoffs of teachers, police and firefighters.” The majority of jobs funded in New Hampshire from last year’s $787 billion Stimulus Package were for public sector employees who were already on the job.
Last week, New Hampshire lawmakers included $48 million in additional Medicaid money from the federal government, even though the House of Representatives has already voted to strip that money from a larger economic recovery bill that would extend existing tax breaks. According to the Reuters, the tax bill faces its first Senate test vote tomorrow.
