HI: Honolulu struggles to find medical examiner

HONOLULU — The failure of the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Department to attract and retain a qualified forensic pathologist to head the department has resulted in its certification being downgraded and less staff members.

To lure a qualified applicant, the department has even bumped up the director’s salary to $200,016.

But forensic board certified pathologists are not a common breed. In the United States, there are only approximately 500.

In Hawaii, that number is four.
