OK: Farm Bill faces conservative opposition

OKLAHOMA CITY — U.S. Rep. David Schweikert characterized the 2012 Farm Bill as “bad, ugly public policy.”

The Republican from Arizona made this comment during a teleconference call this week with activists and some news organizations during which he suggested splitting the bill — one dealing with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, i.e. food stamps, and the other with agricultural policy.

However, Oklahoma U.S. Rep. Frank Lucas, who represents District 3, said the bill achieves substantial savings by limiting SNAP’s growth, consolidating conservation programs and providing regulatory relief for farmers and ranchers.
