When Vice President Joe Biden campaigns for Congressional hopeful Tom White later this month, it will be the first time in 16 years the White House has hit the ground in Omaha for a fellow Democrat.
In 1994 Al Gore came to Omaha for Congressman Peter Hoagland who was in a tough re-election fight against Republican Jon Christensen. But Christensen won.
White is hoping for a far better outcome and according to Democratic Party insider John Green, Biden’s visit means, “Money and prestige.” Green says it’s also a strong indication the Obama Administration believes White can send Terry packing.
In his campaign commercials White, who is trying to unseat six term incumbent Congressman Lee Terry (NE-R), has not mentioned he’s a Democrat. And in a statement announcing Biden’s September 30 fundraiser at Omaha’s Field Club, White’s campaign said, “Vice President Biden knows what he’s getting in Tom White: an independent leader…”
Earlier this month Nebraska Watchdog first reported that Republican John Boehner, the GOP’s front runner for Speaker of the House if Republicans gain control of the House, made an unpublicized campaign stop in Omaha for Terry. When asked why Boehner’s visit was kept from the public, Terry’s campaign manager David Boomer said it was decided that by keeping things quiet any possible protestors would be kept away.
But there is speculation that in a year when being a Washington insider could be a liability, Boehner’s stealth stop here helps Terry raise money while keeping some distance from Capitol Hill power brokers.
Boomer also said Boehner’s fundraiser was a “very good event.” Boomer would not say how much money was raised.
