COLUMBIA — More than a dozen state agencies in South Carolina disregarded the intent of state law and collectively spent at least $700,000 on lobbying this past fiscal year.
The exact total is expected to be higher, because the state Department of Natural Resources and The Citadel failed to file disclosure forms by the June 30 deadline as required by state law.
The group of state agencies — about two-thirds of them colleges and universities — spent big bucks trying to influence legislators despite a new state law explicitly aimed at stamping out taxpayer-funded lobbying.
