NM: Obama’s business gaffe gives Romney a shot to win

SANTA FE — In 2008, Barack Obama won New Mexico in a cakewalk, defeating John McCain by 15.1 percentage points in a state that had been long regarded as a toss-up.

In 2012, New Mexico still has many more Democrats than Republicans — registered Democrats make up 48 percent of the electorate, compared with 32 percent Republicans.

But Obama’s recent remarks about business owners — most notably “You didn’t build that” — have helped Romney build some momentum, and Republicans now are talking about the presumptive GOP presidential nominee actually winning the state.

National polls released last week from the New York Times/CBS and Rasmussen have Romney ahead by 1 percentage point and 5 percentage points, respectively.
