COLUMBIA — If you want to know who doled out big pay raises last fiscal year to state House staffers earning at least $50,000, stop by Room 506 in the Blatt Building on the State House grounds.
That’s the office of South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston.
State Rep. Garry Smith, R-Greenville, said Harrell approved those raises, which ranged from 5 percent to 55 percent. Smith added that Harrell traditionally has controlled their pay.
“Given the circumstances, I am concerned about the raises,” said Smith, who is chairman of the House Operations and Management Committee. “I’m not privy to the justification as to why they were warranted.”
