SANTA FE — In an intense U.S. Senate race, U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-District 1, on Thursday called for the DREAM Act to be added to the Democratic National Convention’s platform in Charlotte, N.C., in September.
“The DREAM Act is the type of fair, practical immigration policy that Americans are demanding,” Heinrich said in a campaign news release. “It’s time to make the dream a reality.”
Heinrich made this appeal in a state with a 46.7 percent Hispanic population.
Republican opponent and former U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson for District 1 responded in a statement: “While I do not support amnesty, and never have, we are talking about children who were brought here through no decision of their own and we owe it to them to find a long-term solution.”
