SPRINGFIELD – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan are made for each other, Illinois’ top Democrat said Wednesday.
House Speaker Michael Madigan is chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois.
“I think Ryan is a real good fit for Romney. Now the Republicans have two people detached from the ordinary American, two people who live in their own world with no understanding or appreciation for what it’s like to make a mortgage payment (or) pay tuition bills…,” Madigan said. “They’re a real good fit, and I think they’re going to be a real good help for Barack Obama.”
Madigan also addressed Gov. Pat Quinn’s low approval rating with Illinois voters.
“I think he should do what he’s doing, which is try to be a good governor and try to deal with all of these contentious issues, pensions being one, the condition of the Medicaid program being another,” he said, adding that he doesn’t think the Republican candidates currently jockeying for a chance to run against Quinn in 2014 can beat him.
“Republicans do a real good job of winning elections for Democrats, so I think they should keep it up,” Madigan said.
