ALEXANDRIA — The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is ready to hear from the public on toll hikes on the Dulles Toll Road.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority will hold three public hearings in September to discuss rate hikes on the Dulles Toll Road.

The airport authority, which operates the toll road and will be using the revenue to fund the $2.7-billion Phase 2 of the Silver Line Metro Project, has proposed rates of $2.75 in 2013, $3.50 in 2014 and $4.50 in 2015.

The toll rates will be an important component in MWAA’s financing plan for Phase 2, which will extend the Silver LIne beyond Wiehle Avenue to Washington Dulles International Airport and into Loudoun County.

MWAA has scheduled three hearings to get input from citizens about the rate increases.  The first will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn. The other two hearings will be held on Sept. 12 at South Lakes High School in Reston and Sept. 13 at Spring Hill Elementary School in McLean, both from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The authority has more information on its website, including additional areas for the public to address their opinions of the hikes.

Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton on April 14, 2012, said the Commonwealth was so unhappy with MWAA that it would rather finish building the Silver Line itself.
“We are actively evaluating whether we can take the project over. These guys (MWAA) are a disaster,” Connaughton said. “We’re at the point, quite honestly, where we think we could potentially do it better, cheaper, faster.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation controls the Operating Permit for the DTR and could revoke that permit based on a variety of performance related issues. It’s time to put the interests of the DTR users first and get this done before it’s too late. Keeping traffic and tolls under control benefits people, the economy and the environment.
