Joe Jordan | Nebraska Watchdog

Governor Dave Heineman

Following Nebraska Watchdog’s exclusive reports on how a $370 million cancer research center would be paid for, the man in charge of the project is apologizing.

NU President J.B. Milliken issuing a statement telling the governor he’s sorry for any misunderstanding.

Those misunderstandings, which will apparently result in a new 35-cent a pack cigarette tax raising $35 million over the next 10 years, started in Lincoln and landed hard in Omaha.

Nebraska Watchdog’s Joe Jordan broke the story.

You go, Joe Jordon! You make ‘em talk, every time!!!

The real question Joe Jordan should ask Governor Dave or any of the Republican Omaha state senators is, “When is Omaha’s abuse of their “occupation taxing authority” going to be corrected in the Legislature?”. Everyone with any intelligence knows Omaha is levying new sales taxes without a vote of the people by misnaming them “occupation” taxes. When is this abuse of Omaha taxpayers going to end??? If this new cigarette tax was an “occupation tax”, sellers of tobacco would be paying an additional annual fee of some dollar amount based on doing business in Omaha. A per pack tax due and collected at retail sale is a sales tax.

Excellent post steak when will they stop??

I encourage all smokers to quit; yes, it is hard but I can vouch for the benfits. & if you can’t quit, vote with your feet & buy your cigarettes in Sarpy County.

Why just “Republican” Omaha state senators? Clearly a partisan statement.

  • OmaSteak

“Republican” Omaha state senators because 2 Democrat Omaha state senators, at least 4 Democrat city council members are in the tank for UNMC…plus throw in at least 4 Democrat Douglas County Board members and 1 Democrat Omaha Mayor. It’s Democrats in Omaha that are pushing/using the “occupation tax disguise” to levy sales taxes without a vote of the people as required by state law. That’s why Leslie.

If you want the occupation tax to end then the state needs to pony up their fair share. It’s the state that gets the most benefit from tax dollars. Gov sticks it to us every chance he gets Tired of Omaha having to take care of ourselves. If Omaha went over to Iowa the Nebraska wouldn’t have a pot to p!ss in.
