MD: Obamacare increases cost of public benefits

ANNAPOLIS — Maryland taxpayers will be paying nearly $390 million more for state employees’ health benefits because of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The ACA extended the age of eligible dependents to 26, creating a larger pool of participants along with the addition of more spouses of employees, said Budget Secretary Eloise Foster.

“Over the last several years, enrollment has increased basically through the economic conditions as more spouses have joined our plan as well legislative changes,” Foster said.

Maryland’s Board of Public Works voted Wednesday to increase this spending, which was originally capped near $5 billion over five years, ending in June 2014.
