DES MOINES – An Iowa deputy clerk of courts was arrested Wednesday for alleged forgery and perjury related to an incident in which she falsified a marriage license for two Florida men, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
Brigitte Van Nice, who works for Grundy County courts, allegedly legalized a marriage that didn’t take place between two Florida men who first contacted her in late 2011. The couple said they wanted take advantage of legalized same-sex marriage in Iowa but could not travel to the state to obtain a marriage license.
Van Nice then filed a marriage license indicating the two were married Feb. 14, according to the Department of Public Safety.
The 42-year-old faces two counts of forgery and one count of perjury, both felonies. To avoid a conflict of interest, her case has been referred to the Marshall County Attorney for prosecution. Van Nice is currently on paid administrative leave.
