Outgoing state Sen. Lisa Curtis spent more than $306,000 of her own money in this past election cycle but it wasn’t enough to send her back to the Roundhouse.
A review by Capitol Report New Mexico of the final campaign filings in the 2012 election year reveal that Curtis spent more of her own money by far than any other candidate in the Legislature.
Curtis raised $346,381.40 in 2012 and of that total, $306,409.40 came from checks that Curtis wrote to herself — 88.46 percent of the campaign’s funding.
Longtime Roundhouse veterans cannot recall a single candidate spending so much of his or her own money.
“I think people who have money should put their money where their mouth is,” Curtis told Capitol Report New Mexico in a phone interview Tuesday.
