LINCOLN — Omaha Sen. Beau McCoy left the door open to a run for governor in comments to Nebraska Watchdog on Saturday.
McCoy said although he’s focused on tax reform and representing his district right now, “I certainly will take some time over the next few months to look at all the options on the table and make some decisions then, but as of right now, I’m very concerned about making this the best session (I can).”
McCoy — who is known for wearing bow ties to work at the Legislature — is a close ally of Gov. Dave Heineman‘s and was a favorite to be picked as Heineman’s lieutenant governor, but state law bans such an appointment during a legislative session.
The Republican field is wide open with the exit of frontrunners Mike Flood, who dropped out of the race when his wife was diagnosed with cancer, and former Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, who resigned his position after using his state cell phone to make thousands of personal calls. Sheehy hasn’t formally said he’s out of the race, but has returned campaign donations.
Fremont Sen. Charlie Janssen is expected to announce his candidacy today during a press conference in Fremont. The open field has forced other Republicans, such as State Auditor Mike Foley and State Treasurer Don Stenberg, to consider running, too.
On the Democratic side, Omaha Sen. Steve Lathrop and former Regent Chuck Hassebrook are considering running, and Democratic state chairman Vince Powers has been promoting the possible candidacies of Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler and Fullerton Sen. Annette Dubas. Beutler recently said in a statement to Nebraska Watchdog that he is enjoying his current job very much.
