BY GREG WILES – A review of U.S. documents released by the website WikiLeaks shows Secretary of Defense Robert Gates referencing a North Korean threat to Hawaii and a report discussing security upgrades at a Neighbor Island military facility.

The cables show that candidate nominated for an Afghanistan cabinet post last year obtained his PhD in engineering from the University of Hawaii and that the British Government cited the success of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in Hawaii as reason for a establishing a marine preserve in the Indian Ocean.

The WikiLeaks archives also include a series of 2009 letters sent by a London law firm to Hilo-based Hawaii Free Press.  In them, Hawaii Free Press is threatened with court action if corrections aren’t made to an article tying together their client, British Iraqi Businessman Nadhmi Auchi, with Chicago political fundraiser Tony Rezko, then presidential candidate Barack Obama and the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy.

WikiLeaks has made a name for itself by publishing secret documents and other materials on the Internet, including thousands of documents related to the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. In October, the site began releasing thousands of sensitive U.S. State Department documents, some of which contained secret information that U.S. government officials say jeopardizes lives and the nation’s security.
