ALL FOR SHOW: An ex-GreenTech worker says the company doesn’t produce all that much in the way of electric cars.

A man who claims he worked at a GreenTech Automotive facility in Mississippi told NBC Wednesday that the electric car company hired him and other workers mostly for show.

“They would take everybody and put them out on the line and we would stand over the car with tools in our hand and look like we were doing something to the car, but we wasn’t doing anything,” the man, who asked to remain anonymous, told NBC 12 in Richmond, Va.

Greentech Automotive is the baby of Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, who repeatedly touts his job creation-skills on the campaign trail. He cited GreenTech as Exhibit A. On Apr. 5, with media reports questioning the company’s financing, GreenTech announced McAuliffe had resigned his chairmanship four months before, on Dec. 1.

Headquartered in Virginia, the company operates a plant in Horn Lake, Miss., and says it will build a larger production facility just down the road in Tunica County, Miss. Company officials announced earlier this month that the new facility is entering “Phase 2.”

Entry into the second phase came two years behind schedule.

According to the former worker, the company has a record of setting lofty goals, but not hitting marks.

“We were told, you know, when we first went in the fall of ’11 we were going to build a hundred (cars) by Christmas. That didn’t happen,” he told NBC 12.  “Then we were told we were going to build x amount through the year 2012 and that didn’t happen.”

GreenTech spokesman Marianne McInerney told NBC 12 that the worker misunderstood what it takes to build a new electric car.

“There’s what we would call a training build,” the spokesman said.

GreenTech and McAuliffed promised to roll out hundreds of the tiny two-seat MyCars, fully electric vehicles built for urban driving. No one is certain how many the company has produced and GreenTech officials won’t say.

This isn’t the first tale revealing the theatrical quality of GreenTech’s Horn Lake facility.

John Affuso, who has lived next the facility for four decades, told Watchdog.org in April the auto assembly plant is oddly quiet.

“It’s kind of strange that I don’t know anyone that works there,” Affuso said. “You would think that there would be some folks from around here that work there. But as far as I know, there’s nobody around here that works there. I had plenty of friends that applied for jobs over there. And none of them got jobs.”
